My name is Richard Rockenbach, born in May of 2007. I enjoy backpacking and hiking. I look to do work in journalism, photography, videography, or wherever I can tell the stories of people.
I have currently completed half of my junior year of high school, and have taken the following media classes over the course of both middle and high school: Digital Art, Glasgow News, City College Photo Journalism, City College Non-Linear Editing, City College Film and Video Production,City College Television Studeio Production, and IB Film. My senior year of high school I intend to take Journalism and Fine Art Photography.
I have around 3 years of with Videography as well as news/documentary style editing. I have multiple years of experience writing for news. I have around 3 years of experience with photography. I'm experienced in working with team members above and below my skill level, and working as both a leader and a follower.
I have attended the Student Television Network annual conference and competition for all 3 years it has been in long beach. Once as a freshman, once as a sophomore, and once as a junior. It has been one of the most educational experiences I have been in. Learning how to better collaborate with a team under pressure and get a very complicated task done in a very short time frame.

In November of 2023, a friend of mine, Justin Saber, who does film work asked me to be a grip for a film that he was directing that would be entered into a contest for the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. I worked as a grip and boom operator for 3 days, filming the scenes on the football field and parking lot. Due to a scheduling conflict I was unable to attend filming in the house but Logan Surber, the director of photography, was able to take over. The group consisted of 5 actors, and 9 crew members. Out of the crew, 3 of us were currently in high school (Myself, Joeseph Nevarez, and Justin Saber). The other 6 had already moved onto college or employment. On the shoot I was able to provide equipment as well as solve any problems that arose related to the equipment, such as an audio issue with the boom that was able to be solved through the device settings. It was one of the most professional and enjoyable shoots I've ever been a part of. When it came time for us to see the final cut of the film before the premiere on February 17th, we were incredibly lucky in that we were able to watch the film at Robert Zemeckis's house in his screening room. Not everyone was able to make it to the party, but we were all very happy with the final version of the film and greatly enjoyed the process.
I was the Dos Pueblos Cross Country team photographer for the 2023 season. I traveled to every meet, taking photos at each one and even recording some videos. I made recaps of the meets that aired on DPNews. Over the course of the season, I took over 18,000 photos. I spent most of my thanksgiving break sorting through the photos selecting the best ones to go up at the end of the year banquet and for the shared drive for everyone to look at. It was a difficult but rewarding experience where I was able to learn a lot and gain lots of good experience in the field with my equipment.
I have worked with DPNews, my high schools broadcast media class and morning news show, for 3 years. Learning many things from the basics of cameras and editing, to more advanced editing techniques and equipment repair. I have worked dozens of broadcast events, mostly sports, during my time in the program. I also have worked behind the scenes for the morning news show. Working the audio panel, the tricaster, or operating cameras. The program also gave me the opportunity to attend the Student Television Network convention for multiple years, competing in contests, attending lectures, and talking to industry professionals.
I did a small amount of work for Finer Movement, creating promotional videos showcasing products and services. The videos were short, only 15-30 seconds and showed examples of Mr. Finer working with clients, and the variety of treatments offered. I also worked with him to create a promotional video for a adjustable board designed to help with improving toe, foot, and ankle mobility. I also worked to help create videos and slideshows promoting the product for potential investors.
I am defined by my love for visual media. News, broadcasting, nature photography, short form videos, long form videos, documentaries, art photography, all of it. I’ve been creating and learning different kinds of media for my entire life. In elementary school I was part of a handful of students who did the Mason Crest News for the first year that it was out. It was a small setup with a single camera, a teleprompter on google slides, and 2 kids sitting at a desk. It was run out of a small closet in the library. When I moved up to middle school I took a digital art class, where I first learned how to use photoshop. I also worked to make the Glasgow middle school morning news show. There I learned how to do a better live broadcast and some basics of writing for news. I learned the very basics of audio panels and video switching. It wasn't an advanced setup, with each show being recorded to a VHS tape and having to be rewound to retake anything. Unfortunately my time on the news show and in digital art was cut short in 7th grade when Covid-19 hit. Covid-19 marked a still point in my media journey, halting all my progress . I spent some more time learning photoshop, making a profile picture that I used on some online platforms for a while. During Covid-19 is when I moved across the country from DC to California. This is when I was enrolled in Dos Pueblos High School, where I started the first class of freshman year in the DPNews studio. Over the next months I learned how to use Adobe Premiere Pro, got a better understanding of how to use cameras and learned more advanced techniques for filming and editing. I learned how to edit almost any kind of video; such as news stories, sports edits, and commercials. I also volunteered at events like live streaming football games and recording dances. I spent the next 3 years in that class getting better at my skills, to the point where I got certified in Adobe Premiere Pro. During that time I also spent the cross country season as the team photographer, taking over 18,000 photos, and took the IB level film course offered at my high school. Over the course of my high school career I took almost every opportunity that approached me, entering into national media competitions, winning 4th place for news package at one of them. During my junior year of high school I got the opportunity to work as a grip for a student SBIFF film, one of only 10 groups who made the cut to produce films. We were also able to watch the movie about a week before its official premiere in Robert Zemeckesis’s private screening room at his house. Having the director of Back to the Future and Forest Gump watch a film I helped make and give praise was an incredible honor. Since just before getting my drivers license I’ve been working on building a business and a website to take my career to the next level. I look forward to college and being able to take my career to the next level in the journalism, marketing, or public relations sector. It hasn’t been an easy journey with lots of hard work, setbacks, equipment failures, and personal issues, but its been something that I’ve sincerely enjoyed doing, and hope to continue working on through college and the remainder of my life.
